The bottom half held its shape as well as can be expected, but was weighed down by the top half and all the fondant. 2. Made with a yeast bread dough, folding in an egg, lard, sugar, and dried fruit. An English specialty, it is said to be a "garner bread". I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who makes this regularly and has observations to contribute. We Americans would characterize it as a "sweet bread", I guesstimate, something to slice and enjoy with hot coffee or tea as a rich snack. Recipe from E. David's ENGLISH YEAST COOKERY. I feel compelled to add-- that the latest detailed research tells us that pork lard (not beef fat) is better for us than is butter. When you search "Lardy Cake" online, you will find lots of recipes tattling you butter will be better for you, and reacting with horror at the word "lard". Search the words "lard" and "trim" and you'll be surprised! For a cake this size (about 12" across) 4 T. each of lard and sugar is not a lot. Americans, compare that with apple pie, for instance!
