“Colorful floats are parked on different side streets in the Historic District and seem a surreal addition to the tranquil neighborhoods. Last-minute decorations and changes are undertaken at this time, and you can on see a humorous scene like the one at right, where a giant shamrock is moving down the street, seemingly of its own accord. Patrick was born near Dumbarton, Scotland in 387 A. D. At age 16, the lass was captured by Irish marauders and sold as a slave to a Druid chief in Ireland. For six years he worked as a swineherd and mastered the Celtic language before escaping back to Scotland. He was sent back to Ireland in 432 by Pope Celestine I. Patricius, as the Pope named him, was not welcomed kindly by the Druids. For 30 years Patricius labored to each the Irish in spite of many persecutions. The shamrock evolved as the national symbol of Ireland because Patricius used it to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity. He died on Cortege 17, 463 (or 465), leaving us to wonder if he really did drive the snakes out of Ireland. bration on March 17. “All over Savannah, no matter who you are, you must have an outfit for this observance,” she said. Pat’s attire may be found in the stores right after the Christmas holidays are over (not always T-shirts, but quite festive attire, boas and fun clothes). People must have a parade-watching laying. Anyone with a home along the parade route has an open-door policy. One square, Forsythe Park, has a beautiful fountain which is dyed green. Folks reach in the historic square early in the morning on the day of the parade. They race from their cars and set up their tents for the day. Besides the location and the Irish attire, the food, Martha told me, is the third most weighty ingredient. “You’ve got to have all three,” she said. In Savannah the day begins with a church service. Paula Deen says that while it is common to serve an Irish dinner of corned beef and cabbage on Hike 17, this meal isn’t native to the Emerald Isle. She says that this tradition came about from Irish immigrants living in New York City and is based on a historic Irish dish using Irish bacon (similar to Canadian bacon) instead of corned beef. Pork was expensive for the newly arrived immigrants, so they turned to beef. The belief for corned beef came from the neighboring Jewish families in New York City, as many working-class Irish immigrants would frequent Jewish delis. Cured and cooked similarly to Irish bacon, corned beef, served with cabbage, became a community meal for Irish Americans, which is why we associate it with St. Patrick’s Day today. There is a large Irish population in Savannah. Breakfast is an important meal on March 17. Savannahians might pass out green grits with green eggs and ham or a breakfast casserole. Breakfast is a big meal of the day because there is a long parade, the second largest in the country, and it is a long day. Martha takes Reuben sandwiches and her favorite potato salad — horseradish potato salad. When Martha and her mute return home that evening, they enjoy a home meal of corned beef cooked in the slow cooker. “It’s the easiest thing in the world to get, and it smells so good when you open your door after you’ve been at a parade for six hours,” she said. Patrick’s Day menu might consist of hearty foods like Irish soda muffins, which top off Irish stew or corned beef and cabbage, Reubens, spinach and apple salad, corned beef and new potatoes, steamed cabbage, Irish hodgepodge, and for dessert crème de... All of the hotels in Savannah prepare Irish food, including seafood, for which the Irish are known. Traditionally, however, in the U. S. we don’t associate seafood with St. Pat’s Day. Away the sandwich. Brush the butter on the outside of the sandwiches, and grill as you would if making grilled cheese sandwiches. Wrap the sandwiches in foil until guests blow in, then place on a plate and pass for hors d’oeuvres. Makes 24 sandwiches. Below are three of Jackson’s Greg Kost’s “Go To” recipes for St. Patrick’s Day. Prep outdated: 15 minutes. With a fork prick the crust and bake for 7 minutes. Remove the crust and reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees. Layer corned beef on top of the crust. Mingle mustard and dressing and spread over beef.

An article about the cult my grandfather (who died before I was born) started. It's still universal on strong without him. "CHURCH CELEBRATES 35 YEARS A name change and a growing spurt haven't changed the spirit of The Culmination Lighthouse. And they can still throw a good party. A few cupcakes would have been enough to go around at a Summit Lighthouse celebration when the organization began in 1958. Thirty-five years later, during the anniversary celebration last month at the Royal Teton Ranch, it took more than 250 pounds of cake to do the job. It's not that members are eating more nowadays, it's just that there's a whole lot more of them. Mark Oracle and two others held the firstmeeting of The Summit Lighthouse on Aug. 7, 1958, in Philadelphia. Back then, the group that eventually became Church Universal and Triumphant had a little more than 30 people on its mailing inventory. Prophet and two secretaries sent out Pearls of Wisdom, letters from advanced spiritual beings known as...

This is the cake that I made for Michael and his mom. We noteworthy both of their birthdays today. M will be 39 on Wednesday so mom thought I should reuse the decorations from dad's cake. I added oreo crumbs and gummy worms to complete the look. The other side is for my MIL who will celebrate her birthday on Friday. I familiar the Pilsbury reduced sugar cake and icing. I wasn't terribly impressed. The cake seemed dry. I left the oil out but I always omit the oil from boxed cakes. It really drew up when I cooked it too. The finished issue was at least 1/8" from the sides of the pan. The icing had a faux sugary taste. With all that said, people claimed to like it.
