Memories, especially murky, sentimental food memories, last a lifetime. Last week, Lois Woods asked if anyone recalled Lehman's Frozen Creme Custard on Governor Printz Boulevard as indeed as the old Brandywine Bakery in Wilmington and its chocolate-glazed marble cake known as "Turk's Head" cake. Many longtime Delawareans told us they recalled buying Lehman's frozen custard, sitting in the car and watching for ships on the Delaware River. Someone else wrote: "My neighbor had a pickup communication and all of us kids use to pile in the back and ride down to get ice cream. Eric Brindle said his father owned the ice cream store and offered to send an old photo of it to Woods. Robin Onizuk suggested Woods call in the Memories in Wilmington Facebook page. My wife and I, our four children and dog were regular customers of Lehman's ice cream stand. It was located on the Governor Printz Boulevard, on the east (river) side near the foot of Myths Avenue. The operators, Clyde and Elsa Brindle, retired and the business did not reopen elsewhere, to our knowledge. We have not found soft ice cream of comparable quality anywhere since then. My old lady and I were newlyweds living at Kynlyn Apartments (now Fox Pointe) in the late 1950s when we first discovered the exceptional frozen custard served at Lehman's. We enjoyed sitting in our car eating the unstarched ice cream and watching the trains and ships go by. I seem to recall a small miniature golf course adjoining, but my wife doesn't recall that. I do remember Lehman's. That was the correct position you went to on Sunday, for wonderful homemade custard. I remember going there often, as a child, with my family. You formed a line on one end and walked through, as you placed your calm, paid for it before exiting at the other end. Their custard was so rich you could taste the cream. So much so, that when they closed, it was a very long time before I would eat chocolate ice cream. Thanks for the memory. Wilmington. Lehman's Frozen Custard was a puny custard stand that has been out of business for many years. I'm an old guy, so my memory is hardly infallible. But I remember Lehman's well. As a kid growing up in Claymont, we went there often. This was the current 40s and early 50s. They did a great business until the early -mid 60s when it closed as I recall due to construction of I-495. That work wiped out so many businesses on the river side of the Printz Boulevard. One I call to mind well was the Sorrento restaurant, operated by John Pini and his family, including brother Ralph. I should have saved the Lehman's menu. Erika Greigg called to blab about us her father Erich Grimminger was the baker at Brandywine Bakery. He worked there in the 1950s and 1960s, after he and his brother sold their bakery, Griminger's, which had been on Wilmington's Conjunction Street, she said. Grimminger later worked for Serpe's Bakery in Elsmere. Greigg doesn't remember the cake but she does recall her father baking throughout the tenebriousness on Fridays and coming home at around 11 a. m. Saturday mornings. Lehman's had the best creamy frozen custard in the 1950s-1960s. I enjoyed growing there for frozen custard my parents, my boyfriend – now husband. If you remember Lehman's, you have to also remember Lynthwaite's on the Concord Pike where the Concord Mall is now located. [It was] another colossal custard stop. The Brandywine Bakery Shop was within a short walk of my home. Good baked goods for special occasions. Other local shops such as the conspicuous Three Little Bakers shop (they made our wedding cake) and Federal Bake Shop in Wilmington were famous and bygone bakeries. Just got back from camping with the next of kin at my old Scout camp (Camp Cachalot, in Plymouth, MA) for our annual Cachalot Alumni weekend. Camping is no excuse to not eat reasonably well, especially when you're dropping accessories off at the site by car, so as usual I trotted out some of my cast iron Dutch ovens and did some baking. This was dessert on Saturday: upside-down cakes made with some (augmented) boxed bite cake mix. For these, I used my 12"/6-quart Lodge camp ovens as ovens (and not as the baking dish itself), using a trivet to elevate baking pans primarily the bottom of the oven. I used Kingsford charcoal for heat, with about 16 coals on the lids and about 11 coals underneath each oven.
